Overview

Nepal’s other world famous classic hike is Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass Trek 17 days. It follows the same trail as Mini Annapurna Circuit Trek with a trip extension to Tilicho Lake, one of the world’s highest placed lakes, and then past the Thorong La mountain pass to reach Lower Mustang region. This trek has become so popular among hikers, as the trail traces Marsyangdi River Valley and Kali Gandaki River Valley, and is surrounded by the Annapurna Massif through the traditional villages of Manang and Mustang.

This hike is pretty easy as well as adventurous, and there are dedicated teahouses run by the locals for meals and overnight stay along the journey. The hiking trail is a mix of 4WD track, icy and rocky trail along mountain ridges, forests and valleys with ever changing landscapes starting from subtropical to alpine vegetation.

The best part of the journey, you’ll enjoy the magnificent views of snow covered peaks: Annapurna I, II, III, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhre, Pisang Peak, Lamjung Himal, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak and surrounding peaks. The Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass hiking trail begins from Chamje, past the villages of Manang, crosses Thorong La Pass in transit to Mustang, and comes to close upon reaching Jomsom. The final stretch of the journey involves a scenic flight to Pokhara, and then a drive back to Kathmandu.

During the journey, you can hike to Tilicho Lake (5,200 m) in the abode of the Himalayas and take in truly exhilarating mountain views and surrounding landscapes. Other highlights include crossing the highest point in the trek, Thorung La Pass (5,416 m) and visiting Muktinath Temple, one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhist.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Kathmandu

Welcome to Kathmandu. Once you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, our airport representative will meet you there and transfer to the hotel room. In the evening, you can visit our office for official arrangements and a pre trek briefing. Afterwards, you are free to explore the streets of Kathmandu, to head out shopping and have dinner in the evening.

Day 2
Drive Chamje (1,430 m) via Besisahar (830 m)

Duration: 8-10 hours

We’ll have an early start in the morning for a long scenic drive from Kathmandu to Chamje in a 4WD vehicle. The road follows the Trishuli River and Marsyangdi River along the journey. Upon arriving in Dumre on the Kathmandu Pokhara highway, we turn northeast towards Besisahar and drive up the hill. From Besisahar, we drive for an hour to reach Syange. Look out for the beautiful scenery of green hills, waterfalls and villages along the way. Enjoy your meals and overnight stay in Nepali village of Annapurna region.

Day 3
Trek to Dharapani (2,100 m)

Duration: 6 hours

The trekking journey commences from Syange along the scenic trail with the views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak. The path is mostly uphill and goes through the cliffs and forests filled with bamboos and ferns to reach Tal. Keep your eyes open for awesome views of open valleys, rivers and waterfalls. Continuing on the trail, we pass by Karte and further walking for half an hour leads to our resting point, Dharapani.

Day 4
Trek to Chame (2,670 m)

Duration: 4 hours

A beautiful trekking day heading Chame from Dharapani. The trail climbs up gradually, and passes by the beautiful farmlands to reach Danakyu. From here, we’ll ascend uphill to reach Koto, which is the gateway to Nar Phu Valley followed by Timang village. En route, you can enjoy the stunning views of Mt. Manaslu. Next, we get back on the trail and continue walking to reach Chame village surrounded by snow covered peaks.

Day 5
Trek to Lower Pisang (2,675 m)

Duration: 5-6 hours

Leaving Chame, we climb up the trail and trek through native forests to reach Lower Pisang. Continuing to hike, we pass through Thaleku followed by Bhratang village and come across Paungda Danda rock face. From here, we’ll cross a small bridge, and begin ascending through pine forests to reach Dhikur Pokhari. Afterwards, a short walk on the trail leads to Lower Pisang where we spend a night there. If we arrive early, we’ll have an afternoon to explore the Upper Pisang and rejoice in the sunset views over Annapurna ranges.

Day 6
Trek to Manang (3,500 m)

Duration: 4 hours

Another beautiful trekking day in the Annapurna region. We continue on the southern route that goes through Humde Airport towards Manang. Once at Mungji where both routes join, we follow the trail and then arrive in the old Tibetan style Bragha village. Here, you can pay a visit to an old monastery decorated with prayer wheels and chorten. Afterwards, a short hike for half an hour walk leads to Manang village.

The southern trail follows the roadways, and it’s relatively easier and shorter than the northern route. Whereas, the optional northern route follows the traditional trail with a steep uphill climb, passing by the villages of Gyaru and Ngawal to reach Manang. Though a bit challenging, this route offers the beautiful views of Annapurna range, Tilicho Peak, Pisang Peak, Gangapurna and surrounding peaks.

Day 7
Acclimatization Day at Manang Village

Manang is our acclimatizing spot. This beautiful village offers incredible views of Annapurna III, Gangapurna and neighboring peaks. We spend this rest day exploring around the Gangapurna Lake. Likewise, we pay a visit to an old monastery where you can get insight into Tibetan Buddhism practices. Afterwards, in the evening, you can stroll around the streets of Manang or enjoy the scenic surrounding views from the guesthouse.

Day 8
Trek to Khangsar Village (3,700 m)

Duration: 4 hours

It’s a beautiful hike from Manang to Khangsar. Continuing on the trail, we pass a suspension bridge over Jharsang Khola, and hike through pine forests and open meadows. On the way, you can see the amazing views of Tilicho Peak. Next, we pass by Tore monastery, and cross Khangsar Khola before arriving at Khangsar village.

Day 9
Trekking to Tilicho Base Camp (4,200 m)

Duration: 5 hours

An early start in the morning to reach Tilicho Base Camp today. The trail goes through grassy fields and then rises gently up the ridge and passes by monasteries on the way. Once at the top, you’ll get the best views of the open valley. Next, we come across a crossroads of a new trail and old trail. Continuing on the new trail, we climb a steep ridge followed by a descent to reach Tilicho Base Camp.

Day 10
Trek to Tilicho Lake (5,200 m) and Return to Tilicho Base Camp (4,200 m)

Duration: 6 hours

An exciting trekking day in the Annapurna region as you hike to Tilicho Lake today. We make an ascent for 3 hours through moraine and then mountain ridge to reach Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. From the top, you’ll get the magnificent views of Mt. Tilicho, Khangsar, Nilgiri, Muktinath peak and surrounding peaks.

The views of pristine turquoise Tilicho Lake with the reflection of snow covered peaks on it is simply breathtaking. After enjoying the beauty of the sacred lake and picturesque views, we hike back to Base Camp. Enjoy your evening enjoying the beautiful views of surrounding landscapes.

Day 11
Trek to Yak Kharka (4,000 m)

Duration: 5 hours

After breakfast, we walk along the switchbacking trails to reach Khangsar. The path offers the scenic mountain views as we hike through the ruins of old Khangsar towards Yak Kharka. Along the journey, you’ll behold the sights of locals riding their horses, yak caravans and herds of blue sheep grazing on the hillsides.

Afterwards, we continue hiking along an unmarked trail that rises gently with ever changing landscapes that leads to the villages of Tengi and Gunsang. From here, a short walk takes us to Yak Kharka, where you’ll spot yak herders with yaks grazing in the open meadows.

Day 12
Trek to Thorong Phedi (4,450 m)

Duration: 5 hours

Today’s challenging trek begins with a gradual ascent of a ridge towards Thorong Phedi. You’ll notice the thinned out vegetation and changes in landscapes as you gradually climb up and then descend to the Marsyangdi River. After crossing a river, we’ll hike along the narrow trail that rises gently up followed by a descent to reach Thorong Phedi.

Once there, you’ll have free time to explore the surrounding area, hike to Upper Base Camp or relax comfortably in the guesthouse. In the evening, enjoy your dinner and go to bed early for an early start tomorrow morning.

Day 13
Trek to Muktinath (3,800 m) via Thorong La Pass (5,416 m)

Duration: 8 hours

We get up early in the morning and embark on a challenging hike to reach the top of the Thorong La mountain pass. Starting early helps us to get rid of any unpredictable mountain weathers during the day, and cross it easily. We hike on the icy trails for four hours to reach the top that offers the most spectacular views of snow capped Himalayan peaks, Mustang and Kali Gandaki Valley. Celebrate the moments and take amazing group photos.

Next, we make a descent towards Lower Mustang enjoying the surrounding views. The bottom of trail leads to Chabarbu and then continues along the switchbacking trails to reach Muktinath village. Upon arriving here, we’ll pay a visit to Muktinath Temple, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhist all over the world. Enjoy the stunning surrounding views and the magnificent sights of Mt. Dhaulagiri overlooking the valley.

Day 14
Trek to Jomsom (2,710 m) via Lubra Pass (4,020 m)

Duration: 8 hours

Today’s scenic trek heads south through quaint villages of Mustang to reach Jomsom. We take the alternative route via Lubra Pass to avoid the crowds and busy motorable road all the way to Jomsom. The trail follows a downhill path and passes by Lubra village where you can behold the sights of Bonpo monastery along the way.

Afterwards, we hike through the trail that climbs gently to Kali Gandaki River and continue hiking through arid, windswept valleys that resemble Tibetan like territory. Continuing the hike with scenic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range, we arrive at Jomsom village for our overnight stay. Enjoy your evening strolling around the village or rejoice in the awesome views from the guesthouse.

Day 15
Fly to Pokhara

Flight duration: 30 minutes

After having breakfast at Jomsom, you’ll catch a scenic flight to Pokhara. Once at Pokhara, enjoy your afternoon on your own. Pokhara offers a range of activities for travelers like sightseeing, paragliding, boating to name a few and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops to explore. You can stroll around Lakeside on the shore of Fewa Lake and relax in this tranquil environment enjoying the spectacular views. Enjoy your evening with delicious meals and a comfortable night stay.

Day 16
Drive Back to Kathmandu (1,400 m)

Duration: 7-8 hours

The final stretch of the journey comes to close as you drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Enjoy the sightseeing views of villages, towns, green hills and raging rivers along the highway. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel room and enjoy your leisure on your own. You can stroll around the streets of Kathmandu, shop for souvenirs, sightseeing around the heritage sites and many more. Enjoy your farewell dinner with your teammates in the evening.

Day 17
Transfer to the International Airport for Your Final Departure

The 17 days long Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass Trek concludes today. Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel. Our airport representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure. Namaste and have a safe journey.
