Overview

Tamang Heritage Trek 14 days combines the most epic trail along with major cultural attractions of Tamang people residing between Ganesh Himal and Langtang range. Starting in Syabrubesi which can be reached within a day drive from Kathmandu, the route takes in spectacular views of snow capped Himalayan peaks, quaint Tamang villages, alpine meadows and plenty of glacial lakes. The scenic route offers the magnificent views of Langtang range, Ganesh Himal, Yala Peak, Naya Khang, Gosainkunda range and surrounding peaks.

This remote mountain trek usually begins from Syabrubesi and heads up Trishuli and Goljung valley to end up at Gatlang village. The one way route snakes ups and downs towards Tatopani followed by Nagthali village offering an amazing opportunity to experience the rustic lifestyle of the mountainous region. This trek includes a traverse along Tamang villages with awesome views of bordering Tibet region, and then onwards to Kyanjin Gompa with a side trip to Chorka Ri, a place many consider the perfect vantage point for stunning views of Langtang valley, Langtang range and surrounding landscapes.

The native Tamang people follow Tibetan Buddhism, and their culture and traditions closely resemble neighboring Tibetans. Throughout the journey, you’ll behold the sights of prayer flags, prayer wheels, chortens and mani stones along the trail. Plus, you’ll have an opportunity to interact with the locals and get to know the rich cultural wonders of this region.

Prior to 2015, this region was a restricted and newly introduced trail for visitors, so this one is all about exploring the natural beauty as well as rich culture and history of this region that dates back hundreds of years. Though the post earthquake 2015 badly affected this trail, it has been completely renovated overtime with the addition of modern facilities. Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu

Welcome to Nepal You will be met by our airport representative at the Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel. In the evening, you can visit our office for a pre trek briefing. Also, make sure you’ve provided all the mentioned official documents that include a copy of your passport, visa, travel insurance and 2 passport sized photos. Enjoy your evening wandering in the streets and alleys of Kathmandu where you can go to see heritage sites, buy handicrafts and trekking equipment, visit cafes and restaurants, to name a few.

Day 2
Drive to Syabrubesi (1,460 m)

Duration: 7-8 hours

You’ll be up early for a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Heading northeast from Kathmandu, the scenic route winds through hills towards Kakani, and further upwards to reach Trisuli bazaar. Along the journey, you’ll be enjoying the stunning views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Langtang range, Annapurna and other surrounding peaks. Afterwards, the road leads to Trishuli River Valley along switchbacking trails towards the border of Tibet, and comes close upon reaching Syabrubesi for our overnight stay.

Day 3
Syabrubesi to Gatlang (2,238 m)

Duration: 5-6 hours

Leaving Syabrubesi, we start with an hour and half walking to reach a vantage point that offers the close up views of Gosainkunda range, Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal. An hour of descent along Goljang valley leads to the traditional Tamang village of Goljang. On the way, you’ll discover chortens, prayer flags and mani walls which represent the unique culture and traditions of mountain people. Next, continuing on hiking for three hours on the trail takes us to our destination, Gatlang village. It’s worth strolling around this beautiful village where you can visit 100 year old monastery and the popular lake, Parvati Kunda.

Day 4
Gatlang to Tatopani (2,607 m)

Duration: 6-7 hours

Leaving Gatlang, we walk along a ridge to Bamdang Khola, and then follow Chilime Khola to reach Chilime village. We cross a suspension bridge and then begin an ascent to reach Gongang village. From here, you’ll hike through a scenic trail and continue climbing for 2 hours before you arrive at Tatopani. This place is famous for it’s natural hot springs which are believed to have healing properties for skin diseases. But, these natural hot springs vanished after the 2015 earthquake. Enjoy the evening to wander around the village and rejoice in the beautiful surrounding views.

Day 5
Tatopani to Thuman (2,338 m)

Duration: 7-8 hours

Another beautiful trekking day with awesome mountain views all the way. From Tatopani, the trail ascends through forests to reach Brimdang village. Continuing on this spectacular trail, you’ll hike towards Nagthali hill. En route you’ll be enjoying the panoramic views of Langtang Lirung, Shishapangma, Ganesh Himal, Sanjen ranges and neighbouring peaks. Then, continue downhill and walk through deep forests to reach Thuman, a quaint Tamang village with beautifully wood carved houses and monasteries. Enjoy your evening strolling around the village and get acquainted with friendly native Tamangs.

Day 6
Thuman to Bridhhim (2,345 m)

Duration: 6 hours

Enjoy the short day of trek through traditional villages of Langtang region. You’ll walk along the trail and descend to reach Timure. The trail is one of the trade routes to Tibet followed by Tibetan and Nepali traders over the years. Next, we continue walking through the forests and meadows before arriving at Briddim. Here, you’ll stay in a home hosted by the Tamang family where you can get acquainted with the locals and get to know their lifestyle. Enjoy your delicious meals and overnight stay after your wonderful trek.

Day 7
Bridhhim to Lama Hotel (2,460 m)

Duration: 7 hours

Leaving Briddhim, you’ll walk along the trail and soon pass Khangjim. Next, you walk past Sherpagaon, a beautiful village of Sherpa communities on the way. The hike through the trail is wonderful with picturesque views of the valley and surrounding mountains. Once in the village of Lama Hotel, you’ll explore the beautiful surroundings in the evening.

Day 8
Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3,430 m)

Duration: 6-7 hours

Another day of mountain views as we hike to Langtang village. Up early, we begin the ascent along the trail to reach Ghoratabela. On the way, you’ll get the best views of Langtang Lirung. Continuing onwards, the trail ascends through wide meadows and yak pastures that lead to Langtang village. This beautiful Tamang village is headquarter of Langtang National Park, which is a home to diverse wildlife and vegetation of Langtang region.

Day 9
Langtang Village to Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m), and back to Kyanjin Gompa (3,817 m)

Duration: 5-6 hours

The village is impressive as we leave in the morning, and hike through yak pastures. Then, we pass by Nepal’s largest mani wall and then cross several wooden bridges on the way. After several hours of ascent and descent along the trail, we arrive at Kyanjin Gompa. There is a popular monastery called Kyanjin Gompa in this village from where you can get the impressive views of Langtang range, Dorje Lakpa, Langshisa, and associated peaks. Once in Kyanjin Gompa, we climb up to Kyanjin Ri viewpoint which offers the impressive views of surrounding mountains, glaciers and lakes. After enjoying the awesome views from the top, we hike to Kyanjin Gompa for our overnight stay.

Day 10
Exploration day at Kyanjin Gompa and climb to Cherko Ri (5,050 m)

An exploration day in Kyanjin Gompa. Up early, we hike to Chorka Ri (5,050 m), the highest point on the trek that offers the magnificent views of Himalayan peaks and surrounding landscapes. Also, this spot is popular for watching sunrise views over Langtang range and neighbouring peaks. After rejoicing in the breathtaking views of Langtang range, we hike back to Kyanjin Gompa. In the evening, we pay a visit to Kyanjin Gompa and yak cheese factory. You’ll interact with locals and get to know about the socio cultural life of people living in this region.

Day 11
Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (2,460 m)

Duration: 5 hours

A beautiful morning as you wake up enjoying the views of sunrise over the snow covered peaks. Today, we head back down the trail to reach Lama Hotel. We continue our journey passing by the villages of Langtang and Ghoratabela to arrive in Lama Hotel. The trail is full of natural sceneries as we hike along Langtang River, and through dense forests of Langtang National Park. Enjoy your evening with superb views of surrounding mountains.

Day 12
Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi (1,460 m)

Duration: 5 hours

Leaving Lama Hotel, we traced our way back on the trail to reach Syabrubesi. The scenic route goes along Langtang River with spectacular views of Tamang villages, snow capped peaks and surrounding landscapes on the way. A few hours later we arrive at Syabrubesi where you can relax in the comfort of the lodge enjoying the superb views of the Himalayas. Enjoy your overnight stay in this beautiful mountain village.

Day 13
Syabrubesi to Kathmandu

Duration: 7-8 hours

The last day of the journey. We drive back to Kathmandu along the mountain highway over Trishuli River. En route, you’ll be rewarded with the picturesque views of surrounding hills and mountains. Once in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. If you’ve free time, you can stroll around Kathmandu streets and markets. In the evening, you’ll have a farewell dinner with your teammates.

Day 14
Final departure

Our airport representative will transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight departure. Namaste, and have a safe journey ahead. Hope to see you soon.
